Triple-A Listening refers to a model for effective listening that includes three key elements:
1. Attention
2. Attitude, and
3. Adjustment
This model focuses on a conscious activity that rejects the concept of passive listening i.e. just hearing the words while encouraging actively engaging with the speaker and their message.
Now, let us explain the elements and get to know what to do:
1. Attention: you must fully focus on the speaker, both verbally and nonverbally. As a listener, giving your undivided attention to what the speaker is saying and how they're saying it.
2. Attitude: as a listener, your attitude towards the speaker is also significant. It is very important that you have a positive and open mindset. For that to happen, being receptive to different perspectives or ideas, and refraining from interrupting or judging the speaker prematurely is necessary.
3. Adjustment: as a listener, you must be flexible in terms of certains things like being willing to adapt and adjust your own perspective as you listen to the speaker. You must acknowledge the speaker's point of view, even if it is different from your own. Being open to differing or alternative ideas and changing your understanding as necessary makes you a better listener.
By following the Triple-A Listening model i.e. practicing these three skills, you can improve your overall communication skills that will help you create more meaningful and productive conversations with people around you.
